Atjeh, or Aceh, is governed as a special territory of Indonesia and is located in the north of the island of Sumatra. The territory covers an area f approximately 57,365km² and its capital is Banda Aceh. In 2004 Aceh was the closest land point to a massive Indian Ocean earthquake that triggered a tsunami, which killed thousands of people, left many more homeless, and devastated the western coast of the region.
