Description | This series contains material from south of Vitale (near West Guadalcanal Island), concentrating on the Vaturanga language. It includes comparative vocabulary lists (Vaturanga-English), a reprint of a language on Vaturanga grammar by W.G. Ivens, and a map of the language distribution on Guadacanal Island. Guadalcanal, a 2,510 square mile (6,500 kmē) island in the Pacific Ocean and a province of the Solomon Islands, is largely a jungle. The island became the scene of the important Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. The island contains the national capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara. Typescript. By W.G. Ivens. Reprint from Bull. SOAS, London Institution, VII(2) [349]-375. Ivens states that although Vaturanga is a small area in N.W. Guadalcanal the language is understood over a wider area, and it was adopted as a 'mission' language for translation of biblical texts. Image 1 is out of focus.
