Description

This series contains material from New Georgia Island, concentrating on the Bilua language. It includes biblical extracts translated into Bilua, correspondence between Capell and George B. Milner, typed (some with annotations) and handwritten comparative vocabulary lists (Bilua-English), correspondence between Capell and A. Bensley, and typed and handwritten notes on Bilua grammar (some by Capell).

New Georgia (Vella Lavella) Island is one of the larger islands of the western Solomon Islands. About 45 miles long, it forms part of the southern boundary of the New Georgia Sound; Kolombangara lies across the Kula Gulf to the west, Vangunu is to the east, and Rendova to the south, across the Blanche Channel.

Typescript. Refers to Capell's SPC Survey and his own work on Bilua (or Vekala), and his reasons for delays in refining his work for publication. He is happy for Capell to comment on what is available. Comments on the use of glottochronology and lexicostatistics studies, the increasing dominance of linguistics fields by Americans and the difficulties experienced by the late J.R. Firth after his appointment to the first British Chair of Linguistics in 1944.

Typescript. By Pastor Rofe (possibly of the 7th Day Adventists Mission). Collected at Doveli Cave near Boro at the N.E. end of the island. There is no indication in the literature that this is a Bilua dialect. Capel marked this "Bilua". List contains 106 words.

Typescript/manuscript. Entries in the booklet Foundation Vocabularies, A. Capell (South Pacific Commission Literature Production Training Centre, Honiara, 1960). Contains basic vocabulary, additional vocabulary, some cultural terms, kinship terms, sentences, verbs and The Boys and the Coconuts story. Capell identified this as Bilua; Jorio is on the central west coast of the island. Possibly a dialect form, although there is nothing in the literature to indicate this.
